Wild West Steampunk America Frontiers portrays the 1860's during a gold rush in Fort Colville of the Washington Territory, an unincorporated land where the rule of the Wild West is law. Living in the Wild West where anyone can be killed for any reason at any time creates an element of danger and fear amongst the characters, who still attempt to maintain a semblance of higher society by showing gentlemanly respect to one another. Referring to each other by last name honorifics, such as Mr. Garrett or Ms. Hancock as was proper in the 19th century, the people of the Wild West live in a mixture of proper manners and violent justice. Some characters take it upon themselves to enforce law and order, while others cause chaos. Still there are those that simply want to make a living by selling their wares or mining a gold claim. In the Wild West, anything can happen and anyone can be anything.
Supporting the steampunk ideal of technology that never was, Frontiers incorporates fantastical machines called Steam Devices that operate on secret magical energy disguised as the science of steam and clockwork. The scientists that create these Devices come from a background of sorcerers persecuted to near extinction, but found a cover for their practice in the guise of 19th century science. The public embraces Steam Devices as examples of the scientific age, while magic is considered parlor tricks of stage magicians. Even the scientists themselves are forgetting their magical origins, believing in the science they preach.
Alongside human beings, the world of Frontiers sees creatures called Golems, the fusion of flesh and machine brought to life through the power of science, much like Frankenstein's monster. Golems are a highly debated practice amongst many circles due to the main component of human flesh. Still, science pushes forward and golems continue to be created.
On the fringe of common belief are Spirits, the physical manifestations of seances conducted by the few openly practicing wizards, called Occultists. The term 'spirit' is a generic descriptor for the supernatural that can include ghosts, demons, vampires, fairies, and werewolves, as examples, and they are very real. However, to the public it is preposterous to believe these beings actually exist, explained away as madmen or tricks of a charlatan.
Imagine Frontiers as a combination of the Deadwood television series, the movie Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, and the latest Sherlock Holmes movie for a unique Wild West steampunk experience. Managed by Natalya on November 28th, 2011 |
