The Spirit
A spirit is a being that exist unseen and unheard by the living until called forth by an occultist. While most folks in 1861 do not believe spirits are real (even scientists are rejecting the existence of spirits), many occultists interact with the spirits often. Most occultists prefer to call forth a spirit behind closed doors, while some of the more bold occultists hold seances for the curious. Whether spirits are souls of the dead or demons or simple parlor tricks of a charlatan is heavily debated amongst those who believe in spirits or not.
While paranormal phenomenon, such as moving shadows, whispers in the dark, and moving objects, are indications that a Spirit may be presence, these effects are not represented by players during Gameplay. Rather paranormal activity is merely talked about in In-Game conversation. ex. "I knew a spirit was present because the room suddenly grew cold, so I held a seance there." The true origin of a Spirit character is entirely up to the player playing the spirit, and there multiple possibilities. A spirit can be the soul of a person who was once alive, but died and for whatever reason did not 'move on'. Such souls can be a dead character who was killed during game-play, and only the player of that character can play the soul of his dead character, but not until the next event after the character died. Spirits can also be entities that most would call a demon. Many of these spirits do appear in seance circles as terrible monsters with horns, fangs, wings or claws, but there are some who are quite beautiful to behold. So called demons claim to have been in the presence of God, or claim to be a god themselves. To prove this, many spell out accounts of the ancient past, or speak of the existence of creatures, planets, and physics that no scientist has ever heard of. Because of these claims from the so-called demons, no one really puts much merit into what they say because ultimately the spirit is only interested in accomplishing its own goals. In the end, your spirit character can look like anything you desire such as a spectral version of your dead character, a hideous demon, an animal totem, a fair folk, a vampire, a wolfman, etc. We do ask that no spirit is from the future, and fits well within the Wild West Steampunk theme of the game. References While Frontiers is not a White Wolf based game, Wraith the Oblivion and Demon the Fallen provide fantastically detailed information on souls and demons. Otherwise, feel free to pull from internet searches on the subjects to build your character. Because Spirits in Frontiers are open-ended, there is no right or wrong information on ghosts and demons that you can use for the game. |
